Post 5: Islam

Respond to one of the quotes from Muhammad below. Be sure to indicate in your response which quote you are responding to. Please write a minimum of 3 sentences to answer the prompt.
  • 1. Muhammad said, “Know ye that every Muslim is a brother to every other Muslim & that ye are now one brotherhood.” How might this idea have increased the appeal of Islam to conquered people?
  • 2. Muhammad taught that “the ink of the scholar is holier than the blood of the martyr.” What do you think he meant? How might this attitude have contributed to the development of Muslim civilization?

  1. This idea would have increased the appeal of Islam to conquered people because they would see their conquerers as their brothers. Rather than being controlled harshly, they would have been treated as equals if they converted to Islam. If they had been conquered by Hindus, on the other hand, they would have been treated poorly because of how Hinduism values the caste system.

  2. I find the second quote to be very interesting. This teaching clearly is one of the main motivations of the advancements of Muslim civilization in the areas of knowledge and artwork. Still, I find it interesting, because in both Judaism and Christianity, the martyr is certainly honored more than the scholar, so this teaching is a somewhat revolutionary idea for monotheistic religions.

  3. I'm going to comment on the first quote. I think that the conquered people would see this as a positive thing. Before Muhammad said this, they would become slaves or very low in the class system. After he said this though, they became equals to the people that conquered them. Being accepted into the culture of the conquerers is a big deal for any time period, but back this many years ago people killed the people that they conquered, so after Muhammad said this it became not such a bad thing to be conquered by the Islamic people under Muhammad.

  4. Im going to comment on the first quote. I think it did increase the appeal of Islam because people see Islam as a good empire who works well with each other. Being together helps empires get work done smoothly. Being a brotherhood will increase the appeal of Islam.

  5. Quote 1: I think it would increase the appeal of Islam to other people because it would make them feel a little more like a part of them if they were conquered. Instead of just getting taken over and then thats it. There would be more unity and they would definitely feel a lot more welcome.

  6. This may appeal to people whom they conquer because it unites them as one. It makes it so that the people aren't threatened by these societies, they begin trust them. Also I think it shows that the people aren't forcing this idea on them, but just showing the beliefs of the religion. Also they are linking them as a "family" when they do this, and proves that they aren't going to fight they want peace with the regions they conquer.

  7. This means that if you join the muslim faith then you will be treated right. It also means that if you are in need then people will come to help you out. This appealed to people cause then people would be happy cause then they are part of a system where they will be taken care of.

  8. The first quote may have increased people's the appeal to Islam because it symbolizes unity. Muslims sound united as one in this quote, where everyone helps each other out in times of need, and there is little fighting because they are "now one brotherhood." The conquered people may have felt more welcome and accepted to live by this quote and how all muslims are family. Know matter your background, if you convert muslim you are automatically part of the family. The sense of security and belonging to this brotherhood most likely put these captured peoples at ease.

  9. 1) i think that this quote would have been very appealing to the people that were conquered. Many people are enslaved and treated horribly when their cities are conquered, and this quote was a promising compromise for the conquered people. This quote says that all Muslims are treated well by others, so these conquered people were hopeful because if they converted to Islam they would be treated as equals.

  10. Quote 1. I think that this would be appealing to the conquered people at the time because they have always been around many different fighting civilizations. This would made becoming a Muslim very welcoming saying that it would unite everyone. He makes it sound like nothing can go wrong because everyone is working together as one empire

  11. When conquered people heard this, they probably thought it would be a good idea to convert. It's a clear message for them. If they convert they are just as equal as other Islamic believers. They might think that as "one brotherhood" they will be treated with respect and will not be different.

  12. 1. The fact that Muhammad said this proves that anyone is accepted in Islam. This allows anybody (no matter their status or gender) to be equal. This would encourage people to be a Muslim as opposed to the caste system in Hinduism or the strictness of achieving nirvana in Buddhism.

  13. In response to prompt one, Islam strongly believed in the bonding of everyone who believed. Even in the Five Pillars, one of them is that you must have faith. So, everyone how has the Islamic faith are connected to a brotherhood. In this "brotherhood", everyone becomes one because they all believe and worship the same god and the same life ideals.

  14. the second one is saying how ink is holier than blood and to me that means that it's better to be smarter and more knowledgeable than to just me a warrior and kill people and shed blood.

  15. The first quote is pretty much a promise of more freedom and rights to anyone who is a Muslim. This would sound good to a lot of people who were conquered by the Muslims because it would mean they would have more freedom, possibly free their family from slavery, and it would offer them all new opportunities. The idea of equality hasn't been offered much before in the past and the citizens liked it.

  16. 1. This quote may have increased the appeal to Islam to conquer people because it is a uniting quote. It lets them know that they aren't alone and that there are other people like them, following and believing in the same things. Muslims believed that everyone should be treated as one, which is what this quote shows. It didn't matter what social class you were from or what your standings are in the caste system.

  17. Quote One
This quote shows that Muslim's are accepting and that if you are Muslim you are kinda of like a part of one big family. This increased the appeal of Islam because it seems very welcoming. If everyone is a "brother" of each other, it gives the idea that they are willing to accept anyone.

  18. i think it would have given people a notion of equality. i think that the people would have felt like they were protected because of the whole brotherhood type feel. also i think the Islam religion appealed to the conquered because they wouldn't have the same options with another religion.

  19. Quote 1. i think that this idea increased the appeal co conquer people because you thought of all the muslims as family, and you wouldnt let your family go try to conquer land by themselves. They wouldnt want their kind to be left to fight for themsleves. They wanted to be a team, a family, friends when they went into war. the soilders felt more comfortable fighting when they knew that the other muslims would have their back.

  20. I believe that mohammed meant by the second quote was that the integrity and knowledge of a scholar is better or more useful then just dying for a cause but it is odd that in judaism and christianity the martyr seems more honored then the scholar

  21. FIRST QUOTE... I think that when the people were conquered I think that they would want people to support them. Then if they heard that muslim is one large brotherhood they would feel supported. Then they would be equal with everyone instead of slaves and be accepted.

  22. This concept of brotherhood creates and idea of unity and equality. Unlike other religions, this idea stops the caste system. People from conquered lands, such of the members of the lower castes, find this concept appealing. For instance, if they become Muslim they will no longer be treated as outcastes. Instead, they will be more welcomed in society. In addition, brotherhood creates unity. Instead of being separate people and city-states, Muslims are united as one. This is appealing because it allows the more advancements and accomplishments to occur in society. It is easier to accomplish tasks if there are more people working together.

  23. 1. This idea increased the appeal of Islam to conquered people because they were immediately accepted by the Islam religion once there joined. They could feel as if they were apart of something bigger than themselves. This idea spread throughout conquered people vastly because they now feel as if they have a brotherhood.

  24. #1) When Muhammad said that every Muslim is a brother I think he is saying everybody is equal. Equality wasn't a key belief at the time, but it seems like Muhammad took pride in equality. It means that everybody is united and does thing for the same cause.

  25. I think the second quote shows how important knowledge was to the Islam empire. It also explains why they gave a elementary education to everyone, even women. You can clearly see that they viewed knowledge as something very important. Which probably led to them coming forward with such great inventions and ideas. They were some intelligent ground breakers in some areas because of their thirst to learn and create new things and ideas.

  26. 2: I think quote two is interesting because it lets you know how important everyones knowledge is to the development of the Muslim civilization. Because of this i'm sure it made them move forward as one and keeping the Muslim traditions going.

  27. The first quote, because it will increase the appeal to Islam and that many people will see that Islam is a good empire that works well with each other.
